Glenberg and Langston (1992) found that appropriate pictures helped readers of procedural texts build a mental representation of the relationships between steps.
Spiegel and colleagues (2013), in a study of 873 teenagers, found greater interest in reading similar materials after reading comics about viruses. Knowledge scores were similar to those of the group that read prose.
Research on illustrated texts and educational comics; these editions were not evaluated. Effects depend on the images, the text and the reader.
